About The Book: The Rajatarangini stands as the sole Sanskrit historical composition, portraying the history of Kashmir. Abul Fazal, the erudite minister of Akbar, introduced it to the Muslim community through a summary derived from a Persian translation commissioned by Akbar. Comprising three papers on Kashmir's history and chronology, this compilation is based on Kalhana's extensive Sanskrit Kavya, the Rajatarangini, consisting of almost 8000 slokas. Alongside Rajatarangini, Sanskrit works by Jonaraja, Srivasa, Prajyabhatta, and Suka also preserve Kashmir's history. Kalhana's Kavya traces the narrative to 1148 A. D.. After Akbar's era, additional Persian translations and histories, including works by Mulla Hussain, Hydar Male, and the Wakiat-i-Kashmir, continued the tradition. Notably, the composition of Kashmir's history persisted until as recent as the reign of Shah Alam, as evidenced by the work entrusted to learned individuals during Jivana the Sikh's governance. About The Author: Horace Hayman Wilson (1786–1860) was a pioneering English orientalist and the inaugural Boden Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University. A Bengal Civil Service member from 1808, he excelled in metallurgy at Calcutta's mint. Wilson, a staunch advocate of vernacular education in India, opposed making English the sole medium in native schools. In 1832, he became Oxford's first Boden Professor and later served as the East India Company's librarian. Wilson's significant works include translating the Rigveda, crafting the first Sanskrit–English Dictionary (1819), and contributing to Indian drama research.
